Sun Microsystems has joined the Media Grid standards group to advance international standards for media processing in grid computing
environments. As part of the collaboration with Media Grid, Sun is providing a gateway between Media Grid and Sun Grid, Sun's on-demand
computing utility. A seamless connection will permit Sun Grid to handle Media Grid service requests.

The Media Grid project is a collaboration to develop open standards for storing, delivering and processing digital media using grids. Its The infrastructure for Media Grid combines Web services technology with distributed computing and parallel processing across disparate networks.

The Media Grid is an international collaboration that includes participants from academia, government and the business
sector. Sun researchers will contribute to Media Grid standards development by participating in Media Grid technology working groups
including :

• Grid Gateway Technology Group (GGTG)
• Quality of Service Technology Group (QOSTG)
• Media Storage Technology Group (MSTG)
• Media Processing Technology Group (MPTG)
• Media Delivery Technology Group (MDTG)
• Rendering Technology Group (RTG)
• Gaming Technology Group (GTG)
• Virtual Reality Technology Group (VRTG)

Media Grid also announced a fellowship has been awarded to Dan Hushon, Senior Director and Chief Technologist of Sun Microsystems’
on-demand Sun Grid compute utility, to participate in the development of Media Grid standards.

Media Grid standards will support applications such as 3-D design, distributed rendering, multiplayer games, on-demand digital video, real-time visualization, telemedicine and virtual reality.
